چکیده

We investigate the cognitive control in polyrhythmic hand movements as a model paradigm for bimanual coordination. Using a symbolic coding of the recorded time series, we demonstrate the existence of qualitative transitions induced by experimental manipulation of the tempo. A nonlinear model with delayed feedback control is proposed, which accounts for these dynamical transitions in terms of bifurcations resulting from variation of the external control parameter. Furthermore, it is shown that transitions can also be observed due to fluctuations in the timing control level. We conclude that the complexity of coordinated bimanual movements results from interactions between nonlinear control mechanisms with delayed feedback and stochastic timing components. @S1063-651X~97!05211-2#

Neural networks for the coordination of the hands in time.

Without practice, bimanual movements can typically be performed either in phase or in antiphase. Complex temporal coordination, e.g., during movements at different frequencies with a noninteger ratio (polyrhythms), requires training. Here, we investigate the organization of the neural control systems for in-phase, antiphase, and polyrhythmic coordination using functional magnetic resonance imag...

Tempo Curving as a Framework for Interactive Computer-aided Composition

We present computer-aided composition experiments related to the notions of polyrhythmic structures and variable tempo curves. We propose a formal context and some tools that enable the generation of complex polyrhythms with continuously varying tempos integrated in compositional processes and performance, implemented as algorithms and user interfaces.

Moving the arm at different rates: slow movements are avoided.

Qualitative and quantitative changes characterize locomotion and rhythmic interlimb coordination at different speeds. Legs and hands do not move more or less quickly; they also adopt different relative coordination patterns. In the present article, the authors asked whether similar transitions occur for unimanual hand movements when speed is slowed below the preferred speed. Participants moved ...

Theoretical Structural and Spectral Analyses of TEMPO Radical Derivatives of Fullerene

The spectroscopic properties of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radicalderivatives of the fullerene (C60) were theoretically investigated. The ground state optimizedstructures of the radical adducts of the fullerene were calculated by using DFT (B3LYP) with 6-31G(d) level. It was concluded that a 6-6 ring junction of C60 moiety generally covalently links to thepiperidine ring ...

Investigation of the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on self-paced rhythmic movements.

Human rhythmic movements spontaneously entrain to external rhythmic stimuli. Such sensory-motor entrainment can attract movements to different tempi and enhance their efficiency, with potential clinical applications for motor rehabilitation. Here we investigate whether entrainment of self-paced rhythmic movements can be induced via transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), which uses...
